However, this surge comes with a significant environmental cost. India's buildings and construction sector currently accounts for roughly a third of the nation’s energy consumption and related CO2 emissions. With projections indicating a tripling of energy usage and quadrupling of emissions by 2050, urgent action is needed to avert a carbon crisis. In this context, Madhusudhan Rapole's discussion on achieving net-zero emissions in buildings through energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions is both timely and crucial. He emphasized the importance of structural cooling as a game-changer in the quest for sustainability. Unlike conventional air conditioning systems, which often pose financial barriers, structural cooling addresses the core issue of heat accumulation within buildings. High School at Mehram Nagar, Delhi. The technology involves simply flushing out the heat trapped in the concrete and steel mass of the building that is the actual cause of discomfort. Those from Delhi can clearly attest to feeling like walking into ovens when they return home in the summer evenings! This technology offers a revolutionary solution for billions struggling with scorching summers and heatwaves, especially in regions where traditional air conditioning is considered a luxury. Unlike traditional air conditioning, which is often financially out of reach for many, particularly in developing nations, structure cooling addresses the root cause of the issue. By circulating water through embedded pipes in building structures, it removes the trapped heat, thus eliminating or significantly reducing the need for air conditioning . This passive approach not only mitigates health risks but also enhances productivity and overall well-being. The team from GRUNDFOS visited the site to understand it and see it in action. We believe that structure cooling has a great potential for widespread global adoption. Its affordability, low maintenance, flexibility, and scalability make it a viable solution for diverse climates and building types. By collaborating with industry leaders like GRUNDFOS, we can make this technology accessible to billions and create a cooler, healthier, and more equitable future for all.
